Apple Pruning Workshop

Learn how to prune apple trees on our one day apple pruning workshop, held in the beautiful orchards at Lupton House, Brixham with the highly regarded Simon Akeroyd.
Simon trained at the Royal Horticultural Society(RHS) and went on to manage their fruit department, including looking after 1000 different cultivars of apples. He has since been Garden Manager for the National Trust, looking after a portfolio of gardens, and worked as a producer and horticultural researcher for the BBC. He has written numerous gardening books, and regularly contributes to national magazines and newspapers.
The workshop will include expert instruction from Simon, as well as providing an opportunity to gain hands-on experience of pruning apple trees. Wrap up warmly and bring along any secateurs, loppers and pruning saws you may have, but don’t worry if you don’t, as they will be available to use on the day.
On this course you will learn:
- How to prune open centre and centre-leader type apple trees on established trees.
- Formative pruning of young trees after planting.
- How to choose suitable apple varieties, appropriate pollination groups and which rootstocks to choose.
- Which are the best tools to use, and which ones to avoid
- Restoration of old and neglected trees
Lunch will be provided and will include homemade tomato soup warmed over the fire with fresh crusty bread, refreshments will be provided throughout the day which will include tea/ coffee and local apple juice made by Yarde.
Signed copies of Simon Akeroyd Books, including Perfect Pruning, which has been voted one of the best gardening books for 2019 by Gardens Illustrated, will be available to purchase on the day.

Parking: We have a small car park on the left-hand side,opposite the path to our Orchard Forest School, shortly after entering Lupton House main gates.
Clothes:Please wear weather appropriate clothing and footwear to access the orchard.
