Louise Loram, one of our Family Support Workers has been working on a few projects recently and has more exciting opportunities for families to come over the forth coming months.
During the first quarter of 2017 Louise linked in with the School meals company ISS Education (http://www.feedinghungryminds.co.uk/) to roll out family cooking sessions over three of the schools Louise supports. This came about from a discussion with Marie Rousse the Food Ambassador from ISS, with both acknowledging that many children in schools learn how to cook. However parents and younger siblings miss out on these opportunities.
Louise ran cooking workshops alongside ISS with a whole family approach, where generations could share their skills and knowledge. The outcome was far more than expected and enabled families to learn about cooking healthy meals on a budget, encouraged socialising and team work with mixed generations and other families, experience different techniques and encouraged adult child interaction. The whole family was involved and all were given different roles within the sessions according to their age/stage of development.
The sessions went from setting the tables, prepping and cooking the ingredients, to sitting down together as a community and enjoying eating the creations. Children were encouraged to explore different foods, smells and textures and share with their adults, the end of workshop child evaluations evidenced that children particularly enjoyed that they could experience this with their parent/carer and enjoyed trying new foods, the adult evaluations evidenced that parents/carers now have more confidence to create meals from scratch and involve their children more with cooking at home.
